    Solar Reels

    1. 3 years ago
Just purchased this battery operated reel. I was going to purchase the Pool Boy 2 with an electrical plug but I had no outlets nearby and an extension cord would be unsightly. I'm so glad I bought this battery powered reel. It was easy to install and set up, it took me and my son 2 hours to assemble. The reel is solid and sturdy, it doesn't wobble with my 20' X 45' heavy 16mil solar cover. That little battery powers up the cover in both directions in under a minute. The only drawback is the ... read more that there is only one remote and it must be re-activated with each use by pressing both buttons for a few seconds as a safety I guess. If the battery holds charge for two weeks before recharging , I'll be satisfied as it only takes 6 hours to fully charge. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase as it was also delivered within 3 days from purchase. Thank you IntheSwim.com

      Life saver!!
I've been using a hand crank reel for years and when it was time for a new one I opted for this one and boy I have not been disappointed! It's so easy to use! I don't know how I did it without this!! I'm in love!!!

      Worth Every Penny
When my 16 x 34 fiberglass pool was installed last year, the $10,000 to $12,000 it would cost to have an automatic pool cover installed was not an option. Needless to say, I soon tired of pulling my solar cover on and off and then laying it to the side. This took up all of my usable space on one length of the pool. Once I started looking for solar cover reels, I was pleased to find that the Pool Boy III was within my budget. I have been using my Pool Boy III for a little over a month, and it has ... read more been worth ever penny. It fits directly underneath my diving board and looks very neat and tidy. In addition, I don't have to worry about pulling and tugging with the fear of ripping my cover. You do need to buy the Solar Reel Attachment Kit for In Ground Pools though. Otherwise, you will not be able to secure the cover to the reel. The only con is that I am starting to see a few rusty areas here and there. If it lasts for many years to come, I will have no complaints.

      Easy to assemble and use
I have tried several options in solar blankets, the crank type and then the solar rings, BUT this is by far the easiest for 1 person to use of all of them. I am very pleased with this item

      Does the job
So far so good! Reels up our 16' x 40' cover with ease

      Worked great
We installed the remote solar reel early this summer and it worked well, once we changed the fuse, for 7 weeks. It has stopped working although the batteries and fuses seem to be fine. We are disappointed because it is such a handy thing!

      2nd set
This is the 2nd set I have purchased. The attachment clips are different than the 1st set. The problem with the 1st set was that one of the clips broke. I also noted that the straps would not always wind on the reel smoothly to keep the cover flat. However, using the straps with the reel makes it easy to store the cover when not needed.

      Good for all solar covers
The "Above Ground" kit for my AG pool was useless. The ropes rotted in one year and the plastic disintegrated. The "In Ground" kit works much better. Forget about attaching the straps directly to the cover. Here is what I do: get a 1/2 inch vinyl water pipe the approximate width of the cover. Glue end caps on so it will float. Pass the straps top to underneath the cover and around the pipe and back up through the buckles. The pipe floats just under the cover and when it is pulled up the cover ... read more stays nice and flat and does not bunch so much. When the cover is unrolled the ends tend to curl under the surface. I attach another 18 inch length of capped pipe to each end of the cover. The pipes pull the ends down and help float the ends out the right way.

Velcro is useless, but there is a way around it.
Do not waste time with the Velcro! If you have an old set of straps, you can reuse the buckles (or purchase extra buckles that are compatible) and wrap the straps securely around your reel. Simply start by threading the non-Velcro end through the buckle around your reel, tighten it, then following the remaining instructions. You will never have to worry about Velcro coming off and it works amazingly well! There is plenty of strap length to do this, but it does require two buckles per strap which ... read more is not included.

      Excellent except for one thing
Bought this about a month ago and overall it is excellent and a good value. Works well and looks like it will hold up good for many years. My only complaint is the plastic attachment clips for the cover. They have very poor fitting plastic threaded plugs. I deformed them with vice grips to tighten the grip and now they hold fine. Other than the clips I am satisfied though I may buy another handle to attach so that it can be rolled up from either side.

      Not bad...But.
All in all a nice solar reel. Easy to assemble and operate. sturdy enough even at maximun extension. The only drawback is that the straps that attach the cover to the reel rotted away after just one season.

Not as good As I thought
It states it can be operated by one person and yes it can, but not very well and it only has ONE crank handle. Most of the other solar reels have 2 cranks or one on each side. If ythe cover bunches or starts to go crooked on the far side, you have to stop, adjust then go back over to the side of the crank instead of being able to crank from that side.

      Works well
Compared to the reels on the groynd, this reel works so easily. You can break the wheels and actually pull it on with one person. Wheeling in is a dream. Only prob is what I knew going in. Directions are a bit confusing and you need a strong drill. Aluminum is strong and hard. But I am a 120 lb woman.

      Great value
I bought this as it was commercial grade. The directions are good take time to do it right. It is not a guick assembly but when complete is well worth it. When measuring the pole lenght make sure to add in the base wheel support on both sides so you have room to wheel it. My old one was 18 ft. but with the wheel assembly I went to 20.. It rolls a 18x36 16 mil cover very easily

      Average roller for the price
I have only used the roller for a few days but here is my experience so far. 1. The assembly process was tougher than it needed to be. The directions are horrible. You do need to drill to set the length but it is not clear. This could be assemblied so much quicker if the dirrections were more than a page and a half. 2. I have a 40 foot long cover and this does roll that cover up but I was a little surprised that it took some muscle. With improved bearings it would be a great product. I am ... read more sure that if you are not in better than average shape you can do it. My 66 year old father and 27 year old sister stuggeled to do on their own. 3. Very stable 4. Overall it is good product but I am not sure for the money it is worth it. A few small changes and it would be something I highly recommend, not sure I do right now.

      Wonderful purchase
This reel system is the best. It is easy for one person to use, especially to roll up the solar cover onto the reel because of the locking mechanism. It does not sag and the wheels make it very easy to roll out of the way. The only tricky part is to unroll the cover by yourself. It requires a little practice.

      Near perfect
Fantastic reel! Sturdy and compact. Love the anchors to hold down in place. Only minor improvement would be to make the anchors slightly longer and maybe more corse thread or other way to have them engage more easily with less chance of cross threading. Otherwise great reel and would recommend to anyone.

      Very easy to use
I just bought this reel this year. At first I tried to use it without drilling into my patio to anchor it, but that didn't work. Once I anchored to the patio it worked like a charm. So easy to roll-up the solar blanket now - even my seven year old daughter does it. We are very happy with this reel!

      Solar Saddle Pool Hangers
Since purchasing a RayPak pool heater for my 21' above ground pool, the use of the solar cover is a must in keeping the pool warm over night. These saddle hooks did the job for storing the cover when using the pool. They not only do the job but they look good to. Even if you don't have a pool heater, it makes using the cover on a daily basis easy. Installation was quick and easy as well. Will suggest this item for anyone with a pool.

      Solar Saddles are GREAT !
I have an 18 x 33 oval above ground pool and installed the saddles on both ends of the pool .I cut the solar cover in half and store half on each end making it much easier for one person to handle the cover born on and off !

      Great Product
I have a 15' x 30' pool. I first purchased one set of the solar saddles, several years ago, and was very pleased with its ease in installing and the ease in use with the solar cover. Last fall I purchased a second set to add to the overall coverage of the solar cover. Some of the parts were missing. After notifying company I was personally contacted and quickly sent the misses pieces. I strongly recommend this product for those that do not want to mess around with a reel.
