    Pool Algaecides

In The Swim Knowledge Pool: Pool Algaecides

    In The Swim's Dr. Pool

    Why Use Pool Algaecides?

While lack of proper circulation and out-of-balance water chemistry can lead to the growth of algae in pools, even carefully maintained swimming pools can sometimes experience algae growth. It is important to use an effective treatment as soon as an algae bloom appears in your pool and it's also a good idea to take measures to prevent algae from growing in your pool in the first place.

For killing out of control algae blooms, look to Green to Clean and Yellow Out, natural and non-toxic chlorine enhancers that boost the killing power of chlorine pool shock. Small localized areas of algae can be eradicated with In The Swim Pool Algaecide, Algaecide 50 and Algaecide 60 Plus, and a stiff pool brush. For repeated algae blooms, step up protection with our Super Algaecide, No Mor Problems or Algae Clear for stubborn situations.

    Preventing Pool Algae

    •  1. Well balanced water, with proper pH, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Stabilizer levels.
    •  2. Constant and consistent chlorine level of 1-3 ppm, along with regular superchlorination to 10+ ppm.
    •  3. An effective filter; run the pump each day for 12 hours daily, more or less, depending on effectiveness.
    •  4. A clean pool; brush, skim and vacuum to remove organic debris which contributes to algae problems.
    •  5. Monitor levels of phospates in the pool. Use a phosphate remover when levels exceed 300 ppb.

If you do all of that, and still have algae - begin an algaecide treatment with weekly doses of our Pool AlgaecideAlgaecide 50 or Algaecide 60 Plus, to assist your chlorine to combat pool algae. Algaecides accomplish this by eroding the outer protective layers of the organism, allowing chlorine to penetrate into the cells.

    Killing Pool Algae

    •  1. Clean pool of debris with skimming, vacuuming and brushing pool.
    •  2. Adjust Alkalinity to 80-120 ppm, Calcium Hardness to 180+ ppm, pH to 7.2-7.3, and stabilizer to 20-50 ppm.
    •  3. Add Pool Shock per label instructions.
      • - For light green algae with good visibility, add 1-2 lbs of shock per 10,000 gallons.
      • - For medium green pools with visible shallow end floor, add 2-3 lbs shock per 10,000 gallons.
      • - For dark green pools with very poor visibility, use Swamp Treat or Green to Clean with a triple-dose shock.
    •  4. Brush pool and run filter overnight (remove solar blanket covers while chlorine levels are high).
    •  5. In 12 hrs, check pH and chlorine levels. If chlorine has dropped to near zero, repeat treatment.
    •  6. Continue to run filter 24/7, cleaning filter only when filter pressure rises or flow rates decrease.
    •  7. Add a Clarifier after 2-3 days, to assist your filter in removing suspended particles.
    •  8. Add an Algaecide after 4-5 days, adding an initial dosage, followed by regular maintenance doses, per label.
    •  9. Add a Filter Cleaner after 5-7 days, to remove algae particles trapped inside of sand or cartridge pool filters
